Rugby takes centre stage this weekend as Kisumu welcomes players and fans for the Dala Sevens, the final stop in Kenya’s National Sevens Circuit.
The lakeside city will host the two-day tournament at Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, with KCB Rugby and Strathmore Leos fighting for the overall title.
“The Dala Sevens has grown into one of the most competitive and colourful tournaments in the country,” said Gabriel Ouma, chairman of Kisumu RFC. “We are ready to host the rugby family in Kisumu for an unforgettable weekend.”
This year’s edition has drawn extra buzz thanks to sponsorship from Tusker, which committed KSh3 million to support the event. The beer brand has long partnered with Kenyan rugby and says it sees the tournament as more than just a competition.
“Rugby holds a special place in the hearts of Kenyans,” said Keza Mpyisi, Tusker’s Brand Sports Manager. “For us, it’s about bringing fans together to celebrate excellence, talent and the spirit of Kenyan sport.”
On the pitch, KCB enter the weekend in pole position with 104 points. A semi-final finish would be enough to hand them the crown. Strathmore Leos, on 95 points, must win outright to stand a chance.
The pools promise intense clashes. KCB headline Pool C alongside Mwamba, Homeboyz and Embu, while Strathmore lead Pool D with Menengai Oilers, Impala and hosts Kisumu RFC. Kabras Sugar, CUEA Monks, MMUST and Nakuru form Pool A, with Daystar Falcons, MSC, Kenya Harlequin and Nondescripts completing Pool B.
With trophies, bragging rights and the season’s title on the line, Kisumu is set for a weekend of high drama and vibrant fanfare.
