In a startling highway incident, a minibus locally known as a matatu was forced between a roadside guard rail and a passing trailer, leaving passengers shaken but alive.
A 14-seater Narok-Line matatu was heading from Nairobi towards Narok when it became wedged between a rock barrier and a trailer operated by a leading cement company, near Gitaru on Waiyaki Way. A viral video shared on social media shows the vehicle trapped in an unnerving position.
Witnesses described the sight as terrifying. Thankfully, other motorists intervened swiftly to free those inside. The injured were rushed to hospital, but no deaths have been reported. Preliminary accounts suggest some sustained minor injuries, although the full extent is still being assessed.
At this stage, responsibility remains unclear. It appears one of the drivers attempted to overtake but whether the trailer or the matatu initiated the manoeuvre is not yet known.
Social media has sparked debate over who bears the blame: the matatu driver or the trailer operator. Commentators are divided, with some accusing reckless overtaking and others pointing to the trailer’s proximity to the barrier.
Looking Ahead
The incident serves as a grim reminder of the hazards facing public transport users on Kenya’s roads. Both commercial minibus operators and heavy vehicle drivers must exercise greater caution especially on highways like Waiyaki Way, where traffic volumes and speeds can turn mistakes into calamity.
