Gianluigi Donnarumma’s absence from Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Super Cup squad against Tottenham has made one thing clear-his time in Paris could be nearing its end.

The 26-year-old Italian, long considered one of the world’s best goalkeepers, has slipped down the pecking order following the arrival of Lucas Chevalier from Lille. With only a year left on his contract and no extension in sight, PSG are prepared to sell. Chelsea and Manchester United have already made enquiries.

How He Could Fit at Chelsea

Chelsea’s current goalkeeping options include Robert Sánchez and Filip Jörgensen both of whom have shown promise but also inconsistency. For new head coach Enzo Maresca, a goalkeeper of Donnarumma’s calibre could be pivotal.

Maresca’s tactical approach at Leicester last season, and now at Chelsea, relies heavily on controlled build-up play and a goalkeeper comfortable under pressure. While Donnarumma is not as naturally expansive with his passing as some, his composure, aerial dominance, and elite shot-stopping could provide the stability Chelsea need at the back.

With the Blues competing on multiple fronts, the Italian could become a first-choice option or rotate with Sánchez, ensuring high standards are maintained across all competitions. His Champions League experience would also be invaluable for a squad looking to return to Europe’s elite.

How He Could Fit at Manchester United

At Old Trafford, André Onana remains Amorim’s preferred goalkeeper, valued for his passing range and ability to play out from the back. However, his first season drew criticism after costly errors in key matches.

Donnarumma brings a different profile—more traditional in his style, with a commanding penalty area presence and exceptional reflexes. He could challenge Onana directly or serve as a dependable alternative in high-pressure fixtures.

For United, the signing would strengthen competition in a key position and potentially reduce their reliance on one goalkeeper for every major competition.

Why the Premier League Makes Sense

Donnarumma has never played in England but has spoken highly of the league’s competitiveness. A move to Chelsea would give Maresca a ready-made world-class keeper to anchor his new system. A move to United would give Ten Hag an elite option to push Onana and safeguard against dips in form.

For both clubs, the deal would be about more than just a goalkeeper—it would be about securing one of the few players in the world who can win matches from between the posts.
