NAIROBI — President William Ruto has donated Ksh1 million to support funeral arrangements for beloved Kenyan comedian Zakaria Kariuki, better known by his stage name KK Mwenyewe.
The news was confirmed by Dennis Itumbi, Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday. Itumbi, who attended a memorial fundraiser at Blue Springs Hotel along Thika Road, also revealed other notable contributions from leaders across the country.
“The President, Dr. William Ruto, ametoa Ksh1 million,” Itumbi announced. “Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika sent Ksh200,000, and others added Ksh100,000 each, including Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah and the area MP where the burial will take place.”
KK Mwenyewe, known for his viral skits mimicking former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, passed away recently while receiving treatment for a recurring stomach illness at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital. His death shocked fans and fellow creatives, many of whom gathered to pay tribute during Monday’s event.
Hundreds of content creators, entertainers, and supporters turned up to honour the late star, whose unique brand of satire earned him a loyal online following.
The family has announced that burial will take place on Wednesday, July 23, at his rural home in Githirioni Village, Lari, Kiambu County.
KK Mwenyewe’s passing comes as a blow to Kenya’s fast-growing digital content space, which has seen a boom in recent years with creatives like him at the forefront.
Messages of condolence have poured in across social media, with many calling for better healthcare and support systems for local artists facing chronic illnesses and financial hardship.
“KK made us laugh when we needed it most,” one fan wrote. “He deserved more time, more love, and more support.”
As tributes continue to flood in, preparations are underway to give the young comedian a send-off befitting the joy he gave to so many.Tools
