Dani Alves: Brazilian to Stand Trial for Alleged Sexual Assault

A Spanish court announced on Tuesday that Brazilian footballer Dani Alves will face trial for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in a night club in December last year.

The court in Barcelona stated that there is sufficient evidence to proceed with the trial, based on statements provided to the court and evidence presented during the investigation phase.A date for the hearings is yet to be set.

Alves,40 ,was arrested on January 20 and was being held at a prison outside Barcelona.

He however maintains he had consensual sex with his accuser.

In January, a judge ordered Alves to be detained after analyzing the initial investigation by authorities which included testimony from the alleged victim, witnesses, and the player.

Despite Alves’ proposals to surrender passports as well as wearing a tracking device, all bail requests were rejected since the court considered him a flight risk.

The defender was formally indicted in August when the Spanish judge said she had found evidence of wrongdoing.

If found guilty he could he could face a jail sentence of four to 15 years

Alves made 408 appearances for Barcelona, securing six league titles and three Champions League victories.He was also part of Brazil’s 2022 World Cup squad.

His contract with Mexican club Pumas UNAM was terminated abruptly in January.
