Safaricom has substantially lowered the cost of its 5G routers after reducing the price by 60%. The cost reduction aims to increase access to high-speed internet for customers across 35 counties. The price of the 5G routers has been adjusted to Ksh.9,999, down from the previous price of Ksh.25,000.
In a statement released on November 1, Safaricom’s CEO, Peter Ndegwa, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to driving digital transformation. Ndegwa highlighted the potential of 5G technology to address the digital divide in under-served areas, improve access to essential services like healthcare, and stimulate economic growth by connecting small businesses to new opportunities.
“As a facilitator of the digital lifestyle, we are excited about the potential of a 5G future. This expansion of 5G coverage enhances Kenya’s internet network and empowers customers to explore the possibilities of 5G,” Ndegwa stated.
Safaricom is also offering eligible customers an option to sign an 18-month contract to receive the 5G router at no additional cost.
The expansion of 5G services has resulted in increased Wi-Fi options for home consumer packages, providing different data plans. Customers can now choose from 400GB for Ksh.3,499, 800GB for Ksh.5,999, or 1500GB for Ksh.9,999.
For business users, Safaricom has introduced “5G Wi-Fi for business” with unlimited packages starting at Ksh4,000 for a 10 Mbps connection.
