The Zambian fishermen of the Siga District in Southern province have come up with innovative strategies to deal with climate crisis in the area.
Lake Kariba, an important source of sustenance for the fishermen of the Siga District has been going through a tale of struggle and adaptation as climate change disrupts their livelihood. These fishermen relied on the lake to provide for their families, but the changing climate has made it difficult to sustain their traditional way of life.
Following the harsh reality of receding water levels, a decline of 300 to 400 meters over the past three years, the fishermen must now cast their nets farther and deeper into the lake’s depths. The lake, which used to be a lifeline for sustenance, now has become a challenge due to the unpredictable effects of climate change.
“I remember how different it was when I started fishing a decade ago. Now, the water levels have plummeted, leaving us with fewer fish due to inadequate rains.”
laments one seasoned fisherman.
This crisis not only affects the fishermen bust also local buyers have raised similar concerns. With water receding, fish have become scarce, leading to disrupted livelihoods and a ripple effect that impacts the entire community. The cycle of scarcity has resulted in hunger and economic hardship.

In response to these challenges, pioneers in the field are stepping forward with innovative solutions aimed at mitigating climate change’s impact and empowering the fishing community. One such initiative is a fish farm located about a kilometer from Lake Kariba. This farm features 54 fish ponds utilizing lake-pumped water and nine fish cages strategically positioned to boost fish catch rates.
The project began with fish cages on Lake Kariba itself and expanded to include land-based fingerling production and a range of other activities. Apart from cultivating fish, the project incorporates aquaculture and vegetable production, all aiming towards maximizing the efficient use of water resources.
However, these localized efforts are only part of the equation. Leaders in aquaculture are urging the government to enact regulations that support the sector’s revival. They emphasize the private sector’s role in driving innovative solutions to combat climate change’s impacts. Beyond industry, the broader public is also called upon to take up the mantle of environmental protection.
