Kenyan security forces successfully countered an attack by over 60 suspected al-Shabaab militants at the Lamu-Tana River Intersection.
The mission, which took place on Tuesday, led to a significant blow to the extremist group. Interior CS Kithure Kindiki reported that the operation resulted in the deaths of the entire militant group. He also reported that the militant’s attack targeted travelers.
During the incident, two Kenyan citizens tragically lost their lives. The militants had directed their assault on four buses, carrying more than 200 passengers. However, swift intervention by Kenyan security personnel from the Nyangoro Forward Operating Base (FOB) disrupted the assault. Consequently forcing the terrorists to retreat into the Boni Forest.

Reports indicated that in the confrontation, ten individuals sustained injuries of varying degrees. In addition, an unspecified number of people were reported missing. Tragically, two individuals also succumbed to gunshot wounds.
A report from Counter Terrorism & Security Intelligence stated,
Al-Shabāab al-Mujāhideen Terrorists attacked three civilians’ vehicles, including one belonging to Hindi area MCA, using RPGs & assault rifles.
During the assault, the MCA was shot in the leg, and his wife suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Their car was among several other vehicles targeted by the assailants.
Occupants of the convoy sought safety in the nearby bush during the attack until security officers arrived at the scene. The injured victims were rushed to Witu Level 4 Hospital for medical treatment, while the deceased were taken to the morgue.
In condemnation of the attack, Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) called for a prompt response and thorough investigations to apprehend the culprits. They expressed their deepest sympathies to the victims and their families. MUHURI emphasized the importance of reinforcing security measures to ensure the safety and protection of all citizens.

CS Kindiki reassured the public that the government is actively ramping up efforts to combat terrorism in the North Eastern region. According to him, the government will deploy specialized security units, to ensure the safety and security of citizens.
