The video footage depicts a group of matatu crew members physically assaulting traffic police officers who were attempting to enforce traffic regulations. In the face of the attack, the law enforcement officers were forced to flee as the matatu crews pelted them with rocks. The shocking scenes have ignited a heated debate surrounding the conduct of matatu crews and the urgent need for comprehensive reforms within the industry.
Former Governor Mike Sonko, known for his flamboyant and outspoken personality, took to social media to express his dismay over the incident. He condemned the actions of the matatu crews, labeling their behavior as unacceptable and warned them of the potential consequences. Sonko emphasized that such acts of violence against the police could escalate and result in officers defending themselves, potentially leading to tragic outcomes.
In a post on social media, Sonko wrote, “Unapiga masanse na mawe alafu akikupiga risasi unaanza kulia ati police brutality?” This Swahili phrase loosely translates to, “You attack them with stones and then cry foul when they shoot you in self-defense, claiming police brutality?”
The incident involving the matatu crews and traffic police officers has reignited the debate surrounding police brutality in the region. However, Sonko has shifted the focus onto the conduct of matatu operators, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive reforms within the industry.
