The hip-hop fashion trend of having grillz, mostly gold or diamond teeth covers on your teeth, is a rising trend amongst celebrities that gives them an edge.
The trend started way back in the 80’s with rappers like Raheem the dream. It died downed and was mostly common in Houston before it sprung up again in 2005, the popular song Grillz by Paul Wall featuring other artists made them famous again.
In 2010, grillz for women became popular and mainstream with women like Rihanna, Rita Ora and Cara Delevigne seen wearing them. Nowadays, many women are seen wearing different styles of the dental jewellery and posting pictures of them, doing music videos and even attending the red carpet with them.
Kim Kardashian joined the trend and has been seen with grillz from Gabby Elan Jewelry, which featured opals tailored to fit each tooth and diamond studs connecting them. She has also shown other gold sets that she has previously.
Beyoncé is also no stranger to the trend, with her being seen using grillz over the years. During her Ivy Park campaign, she had Ivy Park gold grillz on her teeth as well as an Adidas logo that were designed by French grill designer, Dolly Cohen.
Lizzo has used grillz as a statement piece in red carpets like the Oscars in 2021. She usually shows them off by using her pinky.
Madonna, the material girl star, has also been seen with her grillz and in September 2013 she was seen spending her summer with Europe posting pictures of her grillz.
Street style, hip-hop culture and African American culture are always copied and taken as inspiration in fashion over the years and this does not come as a surprise that grillz are still so popular.
