Deputy President Assures Governors of County Funds

The Deputy President who is also the Chair of the Intergovernmental Budget and Economic Council Rigathi Gachagua has promised governors that the treasury will disburse Ksh 94 billion equitable share that was meant for March to April.

While speaking during the Intergovernmental Budget and Economic Council, he asked the governor to thoroughly go through the paperwork while paying the pending bills in order to avoid paying money to unjustified institutions.

‘’The National Treasury will disburse by the end of the week money owed to the county for the months of April. We have further agreed by June 19 the money owed to the counties for the month of May will be disbursed,’’ the DP said.

He further asked the governors to ensure that all payments are made within two weeks, before the end of the financial year. Additionally, he said that the Kenya Kwanza administration had decided not to borrow money that will cater for the salaries but it will rather collect tax locally to cater for the salaries.

The governors however said that they will not assign money without supporting documents. According to the governors, most bills cannot be verified.

This comes after county governors threatened to shut down county operations due to the delay by the government to release funds. The delay paralyzed county operations making it impossible to pay salaries.
