Arsenal are top of the Premier League with 72 points, 8 ahead of Manchester City in second place. The Cityzens won 4-1 in the early kick-off and pressure was definitely mounting on Mikel Arteta’s men. The Gunners capitalized on a penalty, from a foul by Luke Ayling, in the 35th minute. Gabriel Jesus scoring on his return to Premier League action since October 2022, due to injury.

Bukayo Saka started on the bench due to illness and Arsenal struggled in pretty much most of the first half. Jesus netted twice for Arsenal in the 4-1 win. His second was in the 47th minute; fine link-up play with Trossard after Ben White had extended Arsenal’s lead to 2-0.

Arsenal were back in the second half with aggressive offense; Gabriel Martinelli with the assist early on. Granit Xhaka scored with a thumping header from Martin Odegaard’s pass to seal the win for Arsenal.

The next big match for Arsenal is against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, and on Tuesday, Leeds will host Nottingham Forest, another struggling team in the Premier League. Arsenal have set sights on a first Premier League title in 19 years. Arsenal have now surpassed last season’s total of 69 points with nine games still to go

Aston Villa Beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge

Ollie Watkins and John McGinn scored for Aston Villa in an away win against Chelsea in the Premier League. Ollie Watkins scored in the 18th minute despite Chelsea dominating proceedings. The first goal came after McGinn’s effort hit the crossbar.

Mykhailo Mudryk and Joao Felix missed huge chances to level the scores but missed the target. Ben Chilwell also came close from a cross-come-shot hitting the near post. Chelsea pushed for an equalizer but it was Aston Villa who scored from a 25-yard screamer beyond Kepa to extend the lead through John McGinn.

N’Golo Kante returned from the bench for the home team after missing for seven months due to injury, but he was unable to spark a comeback and even missed a good opportunity, shooting wide.

Villa now sits in ninth place in the standings, only two points outside of the European spots, thanks to the outcome. Chelsea falls to 11th and is three points further behind. Ahead of the fixture, Aston Villa head coach Unia Emery had highlighted intent on maintaining a top-ten standing on the log and his team responded by doing just that.

Only Arsenal (13) and Manchester City (10) have more Premier League victories since Unai Emery took over as manager of Aston Villa on November 6 (9).

Chelsea host Liverpool on Tuesday evening while Villa visit Leeicester City.
