Korir, Jaguar nominated for CAS Youth in Sports

2012 Boston Marathon winner Wesley Korir and Charles “Jaguar” Kanyi have been nominated to serve as the Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) in the Ministry of Youth Affairs, The Arts and Sports.

On Thursday, President William Ruto nominated the Former Cheranganyi and Starehe Members of Parliament Korir and ‘Jaguar’ to serve in the ministry which is headed by Ababu Namwamba, this is according to a statement released by the Head of Public Service Felix Koskei.

“It is notified that His Excellency Hon William Samoei Ruto, following the recommendation of the Public Service Commission has today 16th March 2023 nominated various persons as Chief Administrative Secretaries,” Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei said in a communication to Parliament.

Jonathan Mueke who was former Nairobi Deputy Governor serves as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports.

Korir served as Cheranganyi MP from 2013-2017 under the United Republican Party ticket which was headed by Ruto who at that time was Deputy President.

Korir won the Boston Marathon in April 2012 in a time of 2 hours, 12 minutes and 40 seconds.

However, Korir had previously won the Los Angeles Marathon in 2009 and 2010, making him the first back-to-back winner there in eight years.

He took second place in the 2011 Chicago Marathon in a personal-record time of 2 hours 6 minutes 15 seconds and improved that personal record by 2 seconds in the 2012 Chicago Marathon.

 In the 2013 Kenyan general election, Korir was elected to a seat in the National Assembly. He then lost his seat in 2017.

Kanyi ‘Jaguar’ was elected as Starehe MP in the last election on a Jubilee ticket but didn’t defend his seat in the 2022 General Elections.

In his old days, Kanyi was known to be an artist in the music field and is remembered for tracks such as Kigeugeu, Kipepeo and Huu Mwaka.

Korir and Kanyi are going to be approved by the Selection Committee of the National Assembly, led by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, before being sworn into office.

“By dint of the executive action, the nominations have been transmitted to the national Assembly for consideration and approval by Parliament in accordance with the Public Appointments Act,” Koskei added.

Korir and Kanyi are expected to support Namwamba in his mission to improve sports and arts in the country.
