Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr is not new to racial abuse from fans. In the latest incident following Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Real Valladolid on December 30, fans hurled racial abuses and objects at Vini Jr at the Jose Zorrilla stadium.

Videos on social media have shown Vinicius Jr as the subject of monkey chants as he was being substituted for Luka Modric during their 2-0 victory on Friday. As he walked past supporters, the Real Madrid striker had objects thrown at him.

After the incident at the Jose Zorrilla stadium, LaLiga responded by confirming the filing of charges and issuing a statement,

‘A criminal charge for hate crimes has been filed with the Valladolid Magistrates’ Courts, supported by audiovisual evidence gathered in the investigation carried out through images and audio clips published on open sources.’

LaLiga also requested the Valladolid Magistrates’ Courts to forward the complaint to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Hate Crimes so they can participate in the fight to eradicate any kind of violence, racism, or xenophobia inside and outside stadiums.

LaLiga added,

‘The number of LaLiga integrity officers present at matches where there is a risk of racist insults will be increased, in order to maximize detection and identification of this type of behavior, which has no place in sport,

‘Furthermore, in stadiums where there is considered to be a risk of possible racist behavior in the stands, messages will be broadcast over the public address system and advertising hoardings surrounding the pitch to combat and condemn racism.’

Following the match against Real Valladolid, the 22-year-old forward called out LaLiga on Social Media for a lack of action.

Earlier this season (September 2022), in the Madrid derby, Vinicius Jr was the target of racial abuse by rival fans. Laliga reported the incident at the public prosecutor’s office in Madrid, but no action was taken as they responded by saying the chants were ‘inappropriate’ and ‘disrespectful’ but also said context was important, comparing them to ‘jeering’ in a ‘very competitive’ atmosphere, and also said they ‘only lasted a few seconds’.

According to Daily Mail, days ahead of the Valladolid clash football agent Pedro Bravo, on Spanish TV, told Vinicius Jr to stop ‘acting like a monkey’. Bravo subsequently apologized following backlash.

Meanwhile, Vinicius Jr received support from Brazil teammate Neymar who encouraged him to continue dancing.
