The Internet sensation, the ‘Drake Curse’, lives on as Canada lose to Belgium despite dominating their 2022 Qatar World Cup opening fixture.
The ‘Drake Curse‘ haunts Canada following their loss to Belgium in their Group F clash. The internet sensation comes about when a sports team or athlete has a poor run of form following interaction with Canadian rapper, Drake.
Drake poses for a picture with the ‘victim’ and tough luck follows. Canada’s promising left-back, Alphonso Davies is the latest victim. The Bayern Munich defender lost a penalty in a competition the North American country had never scored in.
As early as the 10th minute Canada had a penalty, taken by Davies. Thibaut Courtois was having none of it, making a critical save, as it eventually proved. Mitchy Batshuayi then scored the winner and only game of the fixture right before halftime.
Canada had 22 shots to Belgium’s 9. According to Nybreaking this is the first time since 1978 that a team had more than 20 shots and a penalty in a World Cup fixture but eventually lost.

Davies is now the latest victim of the Drake Curse. He is added to a list comprising Paul Pogba in 2019 (Man United knocked out of FA Cup by Wolves), Paris Saint-Germain’s Layvin Kurzawa (PSG suffer the heaviest defeat in 19 years, 5-1 by Lille), UFC fighter Conor McGregor (loses to Khabib), Barcelona (lose to Real Madrid in El Clasico with limited edition jersey with Drake’s OVO label).
