Electric Kenyan bus start-up, BasiGo, selling electric Matatus has bagged a prize appearing in the top ten global innovations at the 2022 Keeling Curve Prize (KCP) in Darmstadt, Germany.With winners announced at the Curious Future Insight Conference, KCP Awards aim to recognize innovations that assist to combat the gas emissions in the atmosphere.BasiGo has earned praise for its pocket-friendliness in dealing with diesel alternative vehicles, hence topping the transport and mobility category which saw the start-up earn KSh 2.9 million for the innovation.KPC attracting worldwide innovators applications had acknowledged BasiGo’s development in a statement, “BasiGo is an early-stage e-mobility startup looking to revolutionize the public transportation sector by providing public transportbus owners with a cost-effective electric alternative to diesel. It is located in Nairobi, Kenya,” Jit Bhattacharya, Chief Executive Officer said.BasiGo was launched in Nairobi in November 2021 and focused on bringing clean energy options to the public sector with transport vehicles being a major means of transport.“The buses would come in 25 and 36-seater capacities and travel at a speed of 250 kilometers per hour. Passengers accessing the service are to pay a subscription fee of Ksh20 that will cater for maintenance costs and electric charging at a BasiGo depot,” he said. Global Warming Mitigation Project(GWMP) advocating for programs that can assist reduce carbon emissions graced the event and urged more players to emulate the route taken by BasiGo.Jaque Francis, GWMP, “Greenhouse gas emissions are the driving force behind the climate emergency.
