Safaricom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Ndegwa, however, said that numbers will be registered under parents’ details.

“Going forward the junior will be able to have their own number but under the parent account and that convert to the junior automatically when they turn 18 rather than having that problematic element that used to happen before,” Ndegwa said during the release of the firm’s half-year result ending September 30 2022, in Nairobi.

Betting features among many others will be disabled to protect the child and parents will be able to monitor what their kids are doing.

“The parent should be able to monitor what the child can do,” he said.

“We have simplified the menu that the junior account will have so that they are not able to access certain services like betting,” added the CEO.

Safaricom has got support from the communication authority of Kenya to offer the service.

The introduction of the junior sim cards comes at a time where Safarimon net profit for the half-year to September falls 10pc to Sh33.5bn on Ethiopia entry costs and a review of the mobile termination rate.

However, Safaricom also announced that it is getting over 20000 customers each day from Ethiopia.

Safaricom has already surpassed over 740,000 customers in Ethiopia less than two months after the launch.

Safaricom controls 99% of the mobile money payment market in Kenya.
