As the parliamentarians are set to elect their 13th parliament speaker and Deputy Speaker this Thursday, Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Shollei has asked for her colleagues’ support as she seeks to be the Deputy speaker seat.
Gladys Shollei has shelved her interest in the Deputy Speaker seat in the National Assembly as she calls on the newly elected members of parliament.
Taking to social media on Tuesday, Boss asked the legislators for their support, vowing to work with all members “to deliver an efficient 13th Parliament.” The election shall take place tomorrow, Thursday, once the newly elected MPs are sworn-in at the 13th Parliament’s first sitting.
A position that has not only attracted Gladys Shollei but also Central Imenti MP Moses Guchine, Otiende Amollo of Rarieda, Peter Kaluma of Homa Bay town, and Farah Yussuf Mohamed of Wajir West.
The norm has always been that candidates allied to a coalition with numerous members in the house are always deemed in a better position to win the highly contested seats based on the majority factor in contention.
For one to clinch the deputy speaker’s post in the first round of voting, one must garner at least 233 votes in a house of 349 members.
In case there will be no round one winner, the first two contestants will face each other in a run-off, that requires a simple majority to win.
As for the Senate speaker position it has attracted a few leaders among them Bungoma Senator-elect Moses Wetangula, Kenneth Marende who served in the same role in the 10th Parliament, and Agano party leader David Mwaure Waihiga.
