Kapseret MP Oscar Kipchumba Sudi is preparing to seek a fourth term in Parliament, as political activity builds in the Uasin Gishu constituency ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sudi was first elected in 2013 and has since won the seat in the 2017 and 2022 elections. Parliament’s records list him as the current Kapseret MP and a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
The next General Election is scheduled for August 10, 2027, according to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
Sudi has presented his record in terms of development projects and programmes aimed at supporting residents.
“My vision and plan is to implement programmes that impact positively on the lives of our people. Leadership is about the people and not selfishness,” he said.
His constituency initiatives have included support for small businesses and income-generating activities. These have included the distribution of equipment such as posho mills and motorcycles, as well as vehicles to groups and beneficiaries.
Education is also central to the agenda he says he wants to pursue if re-elected.
Sudi has said he intends to support the construction and renovation of classrooms, improve learning facilities and assist students from needy families through education programmes and scholarships.
He has also identified youth and women’s economic empowerment, security and infrastructure as other priorities.
On security, he has pointed to efforts to expand infrastructure such as police posts and stations. He has also cited roads and rural electrification among the areas requiring continued attention.
Sudi has sought to portray peace as another important part of his political agenda.
In 2019, he took part in peace efforts in the Kerio Valley after a period of insecurity involving communities in the region. He brought together leaders, elders and young people from the Pokot and Marakwet communities for discussions aimed at easing tensions.
More recently, he urged Kenyans to remain peaceful as the country moves towards another election.
“I cherish peace and unity and that is why I always ask Kenyans to remain peaceful even as we head to the elections,” he said at a church meeting in Kapseret attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
Kindiki attended an interdenominational church service and fundraiser in the constituency on August 30.
Sudi’s political career predates his election to Parliament. According to his parliamentary profile, he worked as a director at Millscup Limited before entering elective politics. He has served as Kapseret MP since 2013.
During his time in Parliament, he has served on several committees, including the Departmental Committee on Lands and the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee. Parliament’s current records also list him on the Regional Development Committee.
But a fourth term is unlikely to be uncontested.
Several potential challengers have been mentioned as possible contenders for the Kapseret seat. They include John Chumba, Pauline Tuwei, Emmanuel Kemboi, Sylvia Metto and Frank Murgor.
Their emergence points to a contest that could become more competitive as the election approaches. Still, the field is not yet settled. Candidates will have to go through party nominations or meet the requirements for an independent bid before the final ballot takes shape.
The electoral calendar leaves time for the race to develop. IEBC has set May 9, 2027, as the deadline for political parties to conduct their primaries and resolve related disputes.
For now, Sudi remains the incumbent and is preparing to defend a seat he has held for more than a decade.
A Kapseret resident, Joseph Brett, said he expected Sudi to retain the constituency, while acknowledging that other candidates had a right to compete.
“We are in a democratic country and everyone is free to vie in Kapseret like in other areas,” Brett said.
The race is likely to sharpen in the months ahead as more aspirants make their intentions public and political parties begin preparing for nominations.
