The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has adopted a new name, with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka announcing on Monday that the opposition outfit will now operate as the Ukombozi Alliance.
Kalonzo said the decision was reached unanimously by the coalition’s leadership as the parties reorganise ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.
“After today, even this podium will change because the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has this day, September 21, 2026, unanimously agreed to rebrand and change the name to Ukombozi Alliance,” Kalonzo said.
The announcement formalises a rebranding process that the coalition had signalled earlier this month. Its leaders have been discussing changes to the coalition’s structures, policy platform and public engagement.
Uhuru Kenyatta to remain coalition chair
Kalonzo said retired President Uhuru Kenyatta would continue to serve as chairman of the coalition as the parties work through the next stage of the reorganisation.
He said Uhuru was expected to convene a Jubilee Party meeting on Tuesday to make decisions that would then be communicated to the newly named Ukombozi Alliance.
“The coalition chair is the 4th president, Uhuru Kenyatta, and tomorrow he is convening the Jubilee Party meeting to make necessary and important decisions and communicate to the Ukombozi Alliance so that we move together and in union,” Kalonzo said.
Kalonzo added that arrangements would be made for the formal handover of the Jubilee Party chairmanship.
The move comes after the High Court ruled on September 14 that retired presidents could not continue holding formal leadership positions in political parties beyond the period provided for under the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act. Uhuru has since indicated that he will relinquish the Jubilee chairmanship while remaining free to participate in political activities.
Opposition parties prepare for a new phase
The rebranding comes as opposition parties continue consultations over how to organise ahead of the 2027 election.
Siaya Governor James Orengo, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa and former Attorney General Justin Muturi were among leaders present during Monday’s announcement.
The new alliance is expected to operate under the slogan “One Term, One Team, One Coalition”, according to reports from the event. Blue and white have also been identified as the alliance’s colours.
Kalonzo said the coalition would move quickly to implement the decisions agreed upon by its leadership.
“All necessary actions to that decision will be undertaken expeditiously,” he said, urging Kenyans to take note of the coalition’s new direction.
The rebranding does not, by itself, settle the wider question of how opposition parties will cooperate in the 2027 contest. Further decisions on party structures, leadership and coordination are expected as the consultations continue.
The political formation that entered the 2022 election under the Azimio la Umoja name has begun its next phase under a different banner: Ukombozi Alliance.
