Israeli forces raided the Qalandia refugee camp on the outskirts of Jerusalem on Wednesday, leaving at least eight people reportedly injured in an operation that underscored the continuing volatility across the occupied West Bank.
Residents awoke to the sound of armoured military vehicles entering the densely populated camp, which lies between Jerusalem and Ramallah. Journalists from AFP at the scene reported seeing around a dozen Israeli military jeeps moving into the area, while soldiers prevented both residents and members of the media from entering during the operation.
The Israeli military said the raid was part of an ongoing security operation.
“Security forces are operating in the Qalandia camp area in order to thwart terror and apprehend wanted individuals,” an Israeli military official told AFP.
Palestinian health officials and local sources said eight people were injured during the raid, though the extent of their injuries was not immediately clear. There was no immediate confirmation from Israeli authorities regarding the reported casualties.
The operation comes at a time of heightened tensions in the occupied West Bank, where Israeli military raids have become increasingly frequent amid a prolonged security campaign. Qalandia, one of the largest Palestinian refugee camps, has repeatedly witnessed clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian residents in recent months.
Residents have also voiced growing concerns over possible evictions and changes affecting the camp and nearby areas, adding to fears already fuelled by the broader conflict. Palestinian officials have accused Israel of increasing pressure on communities in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, while Israeli authorities maintain that their operations are aimed at preventing attacks and arresting suspects linked to militant activity.
The latest raid highlights the fragile security situation in the region, where military operations, arrests and confrontations continue to deepen uncertainty for both Israelis and Palestinians.
