Aden Duale’s marriage began in a way that may seem unfamiliar to many young Kenyans today: his parents helped set it in motion before he had much say in the matter.

The Health Cabinet Secretary has previously spoken about how his family approached the household of retired General Mohamoud Mohamed, whose daughter, Farida, would eventually become his wife.

Duale recounted the story in his memoir, For the Record: The Inside Story of the Power of Politics, Lawmaking, and Leadership in Kenya. He said marriage in Somali culture has traditionally involved more than the two people who are expected to share a home.

Families and elders can play a central role, from identifying a potential partner to assessing whether the two families are a suitable match. Duale said the young man and woman may only be brought into the discussion after the families have completed that process.

In his case, the connection was also shaped by familiarity. General Mohamed’s family had previously helped Duale at different points in his education, including during his time at Moi Forces Academy and later while he was undertaking teaching practice.

While studying at Moi University, Duale began courting Farida. He has recalled a quieter form of romance, built around handwritten letters and meetings rather than the instant messages and social media posts that define courtship today.

“Post office” is how Duale described one of the unlikely foundations of their relationship, recalling the letters the two exchanged while they were apart.

The marriage eventually brought together two very different backgrounds. Duale, who grew up in Garissa, went on to become a teacher, politician and one of Kenya’s most prominent government officials. Farida was the daughter of a senior military officer who later served as Kenya’s Chief of General Staff.

General Mohamed was among the officers involved in restoring government control during the failed 1982 coup attempt. He later served as Chief of General Staff from 1986 to 1996.Pulse Kenya

Despite the stature of his father-in-law, Duale has said the marriage did not involve an extravagant dowry.

In an earlier interview, he said he paid four cows.

“Dowry is not prohibitive in our community,” Duale said, adding that he had five sons with his wife and that he valued his family deeply. The Standard

The couple have largely kept their family life away from the political spotlight. Their five sons have occasionally been mentioned in public accounts, but Farida has generally maintained a low profile.

The story of Duale’s marriage is therefore less about a grand political alliance than about the meeting of family tradition, youthful courtship and a relationship that began long before he became a Cabinet secretary.

Today, Duale is one of President William Ruto’s senior Cabinet officials, serving as Health Cabinet Secretary. His political career has taken him from Parliament to the Cabinet, but the story he has told about his marriage remains rooted in something much more personal: family introductions, letters and, eventually, four cows.
