OL KALOU, Kenya — As voters across Ol Kalou constituency cast their ballots in Thursday’s parliamentary by-election, one of the candidates hoping to earn their trust is Samuel Muchina Nyagah, the nominee of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

For many Kenyans outside Nyandarua County, Muchina is a relatively unfamiliar figure. Yet his candidacy has attracted national attention because the election is widely seen as a key test of the ruling party’s support in the Mt Kenya region.

From Party Primaries to the Ballot

Muchina entered the race after winning the UDA party nominations in May, emerging victorious in a closely contested primary that attracted ten aspirants.

He received 3,221 votes, narrowly defeating George Wambugu Kanuri, who polled 3,077 votes, securing the party’s ticket for one of the country’s most closely watched by-elections. Political observers described the result as evidence of a highly competitive contest within the ruling party. Independent media reported the outcome after it was announced by UDA’s National Elections Board.

Following his victory, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) formally cleared him to contest the parliamentary seat.

Speaking after receiving his nomination papers, Muchina told supporters that his “journey to Parliament begins” and pledged to campaign across the constituency in pursuit of every vote.

Campaign Message

Muchina has built his campaign around the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), arguing that continued cooperation with the national government would help accelerate development projects in Ol Kalou.

At campaign rallies, he has promised to champion farmers, improve infrastructure, expand economic opportunities for young people and support small businesses if elected.

His message has largely focused on continuity, positioning himself as a candidate who can work with the Kenya Kwanza administration to deliver development projects to the constituency.

A Low Public Profile

Despite leading the ruling party’s campaign in Ol Kalou, Muchina remains relatively unknown nationally.

A review of publicly available records shows there is limited independently verified information about his professional background or previous leadership positions. Most credible public reporting has focused on his victory in the UDA nominations and his campaign activities ahead of the by-election rather than his personal biography.

That has made the campaign trail the principal way voters have come to know him.

A Seat with National Significance

The by-election follows the death of longtime Member of Parliament David Njuguna Kiaraho, creating a vacancy in a constituency considered politically important in Nyandarua County.

While the election will determine Ol Kalou’s next representative in the National Assembly, analysts say it is also being watched nationally as an indicator of political sentiment in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

For Samuel Muchina Nyagah, the contest represents both a first attempt at entering Parliament and an opportunity to establish himself on Kenya’s national political stage.
