OL KALOU, Kenya — As voters in Ol Kalou choose their next Member of Parliament, one of the candidates seeking their support is Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru Ngotho, who is contesting the seat on the ticket of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Although he is a newcomer to national elective politics, Ngotho has emerged as one of the leading challengers in a by-election that has drawn attention far beyond Nyandarua County. The vote is widely viewed as a measure of the political strength of the newly formed DCP in the Mt Kenya region.
Entering Parliament for the First Time
Unlike some established politicians in the race, Ngotho is seeking elective office for the first time.
His candidature follows his nomination by DCP, a party that has gained prominence in central Kenya since its launch and has attracted several leaders allied to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
After receiving clearance from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Ngotho began campaigning across Ol Kalou, presenting himself as an alternative to the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Campaigning on a Message of Change
Throughout the campaign, Ngotho’s message has centred on political change.
Speaking during rallies across the constituency, he argued that Ol Kalou residents were ready for a different style of leadership focused on accountability and responsive representation.
In his final campaign message before the mandatory cooling-off period, he said voters had already made up their minds.
“The great people of Ol Kalou have made up their minds about the kind of leadership they want.”
He also told supporters:
“No amount of intimidation or tokenism will shake their resolve to secure a better tomorrow.”
The phrase “Change is coming soon” became a recurring slogan throughout his campaign.
Backed by Senior DCP Leaders
Ngotho’s campaign has received significant support from senior figures within DCP.
Nyandarua Senator John Methu, who serves as the party’s Secretary-General, has accompanied him at several campaign events and described him as the party’s preferred candidate to represent Ol Kalou in Parliament.
Other DCP leaders, including party officials campaigning in the Mt Kenya region, have portrayed the by-election as an opportunity for voters to demonstrate support for a new political movement ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Focus on Local Issues
Rather than concentrating on national politics, Ngotho has largely focused his campaign on constituency issues.
He has promised to champion the interests of dairy farmers, improve road infrastructure, expand access to water, create opportunities for young people and strengthen support for small businesses.
His campaign has relied heavily on public meetings and door-to-door engagement across the constituency’s five wards, where agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy.
A Limited Public Record
Despite his prominence in the by-election, there is relatively little independently verified public information about Ngotho’s professional background or previous leadership experience.
Most publicly available information relates to his campaign for the Ol Kalou parliamentary seat and statements made during the election period. As a result, many voters are encountering him for the first time through this campaign.
A Closely Watched Election
The by-election was triggered by the death of former MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, who represented Ol Kalou for more than a decade.
For Ngotho, the election represents an opportunity to secure his first parliamentary seat. For DCP, it is a chance to establish a foothold in the National Assembly and demonstrate its electoral appeal in one of Kenya’s most politically influential regions.
The outcome is expected to be closely watched by political parties across the country as they prepare for the 2027 General Election.
