Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has shared her joy after her son, Don, and his partner, Yvonne, marked a major milestone in their relationship by holding a Ngurario ceremony, a key rite in Kikuyu traditional marriage customs.
The ceremony, attended by family and loved ones, formally recognised the couple’s union under tradition and paved the way for their forthcoming wedding.
In a heartfelt message, the governor described the occasion as one she would treasure for years to come, saying it was a proud moment to witness her son and his partner commit to building a life together.
“Congratulations, our son Don, and our daughter Yvonne, on your Ngurario. Some moments stay with a mother forever, and today is one of them. Seeing you both come together in love and commitment fills our hearts with immense joy and gratitude,” Waiguru said.
She also welcomed Yvonne into the family, expressing optimism about the couple’s future and wishing them a marriage built on love, respect, faith and kindness.
“Yvonne, welcome warmly into our family. We are blessed to have you, and we look forward to sharing this journey with you both.”
Waiguru encouraged the newlyweds to continue choosing one another through every stage of their journey together, adding that the family was eagerly looking forward to the next celebration.
“We love you dearly and look forward to the wedding. Harusi tunayo!” she said.
The governor accompanied her message with photographs from the ceremony, capturing moments of celebration between the couple and their families.
A Ngurario ceremony holds deep cultural significance within the Kikuyu community, symbolising the formal recognition of a marriage under customary tradition. It is widely regarded as one of the final and most important rites before a couple proceeds to a church or civil wedding.
