A leading Kenyan mental health researcher was shot dead in broad daylight on Wednesday morning in Nairobi, in a killing that has stunned the country’s medical and research community.
Dr Victoria Mutiso was travelling in a ride-hailing vehicle when gunmen attacked her at about 9 a.m. along Mbagathi Link Road at the junction with Mawenzi Road in the Upper Hill area. Police have opened an investigation into what detectives believe may have been a targeted shooting.
According to preliminary police findings reported by Citizen Digital, a Toyota Prado blocked the vehicle carrying Dr Mutiso before a motorcycle with three men pulled up beside it. One of the assailants reportedly stepped forward and fired two shots at close range before fleeing with the others. The attackers escaped within moments, leaving investigators to piece together the events that unfolded.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has since taken over the case. Detectives are examining forensic evidence, reviewing witness accounts and tracing possible CCTV footage from the area as they seek to establish who carried out the attack and why. Officials have urged the public to allow investigations to run their course and to avoid speculation while inquiries continue.
Dr Mutiso was widely respected in Kenya and beyond for her work in mental health research. She dedicated much of her career to improving access to mental healthcare, particularly for children, adolescents and vulnerable communities. Colleagues have described her as a passionate researcher whose work helped shape mental health programmes and informed public policy across the region.
Her death has sparked grief among healthcare professionals, researchers and members of the public, many of whom have paid tribute to her contributions to mental health awareness and treatment.
As investigators continue their work, police have not announced any arrests or disclosed a possible motive for the killing. The circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting remain under active investigation.
