A meeting between Jubilee deputy party leader Fred Matiang’i and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna on Wednesday has added fresh momentum to conversations about possible opposition cooperation ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.
The leaders met in Nairobi alongside several politicians allied to their respective camps, with photographs shared online showing handshakes, informal conversations and a group photo after the meeting.
Neither side disclosed what was discussed. But the timing of the meeting, coming as political parties intensify consultations and position themselves for the next election, has drawn attention across the country’s political landscape.
In a short video shared on social media, Matiang’i briefly addressed those present after the meeting.
“Just met with this team and wished them well,” he said before shaking hands with Senator Sifuna.
The exchange that followed was light-hearted but politically telling.
Sifuna invited the former Interior Cabinet Secretary to visit Western Kenya, saying he should tour the region with them.
Matiang’i responded in Kiswahili, saying, “Tumefunga Kisii,” suggesting confidence in his political support in the Kisii region.
Funyula MP Wilberforce Oundo, who was also present, joined the conversation, telling Matiang’i:
“Tunaenda kufunga Western. Kuja tutembee na wewe Western.”
The remarks were met with laughter from those in attendance.
While the comments were made in a relaxed setting, they have quickly fuelled debate over whether opposition leaders are laying the groundwork for broader political cooperation ahead of the 2027 polls.
No formal alliance or political agreement was announced after the meeting, and neither Matiang’i nor Sifuna issued a detailed statement outlining the purpose of the discussions.
The meeting nevertheless comes at a time when Kenya’s political parties are increasingly engaging in consultations, with leaders exploring possible partnerships as the next General Election moves closer.
Political analysts have previously noted that such meetings often serve as early signals of shifting alliances, although informal consultations do not necessarily lead to formal political coalitions. This Wednesday’s meeting leaves more questions than answers, while reinforcing the growing focus on opposition strategy as the race towards 2027 gradually takes shape.
