At the Parliament building, Hon. Sammy Douglas Kamau took the oath of office as the new Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou. His swearing-in marked the end of a bruising by-election and the start of what allies and critics alike say will be a closely watched tenure.
Among the first to publicly commend him was former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who struck a tone that was both congratulatory and cautionary.
“Campaigns and celebrations are now over and it is time to work,” Gachagua said in a statement. “Always remember to listen to your people; the people who elected you.”
Hon. Kamau’s victory has been framed by his supporters as decisive. But it did not come without controversy. In his remarks, Gachagua alleged that the contest had been shaped by heavy government spending, claiming that more than Kshs. 16 billion of public funds were poured into short-term projects and inducements to sway voters.
Those claims could not be independently verified. Government officials have not publicly responded in detail to the accusation, though such allegations are not uncommon in Kenya’s fiercely contested by-elections.
Still, Gachagua cast the outcome as a sign of voter resolve. “I salute the great people of Ol Kalou for rejecting bribes and intimidation,” he said.
The former deputy president also used the moment to signal broader political ambitions. He described Mr Kamau’s win as the first parliamentary seat for the Democratic Citizens Party (DCP), calling it “the first step” in building a national political force ahead of the next general election.
“The party of the moment and the future is Green,” he added, in reference to the party’s colours and platform. “We remain focused on becoming the majority.”
For Hon. Kamau, the immediate challenge is more grounded. Nyandarua County, like much of Kenya’s central highlands, faces persistent concerns over agriculture, infrastructure and youth employment. Voters who turned out in large numbers will expect quick results.
Gachagua, who has worked with Hon. Kamau in the past, expressed confidence in his ability to deliver. “I have no doubt you will not disappoint your constituents,” he said.
