President William Ruto on Monday officially opened the Ngong Road flyover, marking the completion of a major road project aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion along one of Nairobi’s busiest transport corridors.

The KSh3.58 billion overpass, built by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), is expected to improve traffic flow at the busy Ngong Road–Naivasha Road junction near Junction Mall, an area long associated with heavy congestion during peak hours.

The project was financed through a loan from Spain’s Corporate International Fund (FIEM) and forms part of wider efforts to improve mobility within the capital.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, President Ruto said the new infrastructure reflects the government’s commitment to expanding road networks that support economic growth and reduce travel delays for commuters.

KURA said the flyover introduces grade separation at the junction, allowing through traffic to move without stopping at intersections. The agency added that the project also includes dedicated non-motorised transport facilities, providing safer space for pedestrians and cyclists.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir said the overpass stretches approximately 400 metres, with an additional 400 metres of expanded roadway designed to improve traffic movement around the interchange.

“The overpass is on a 400-metre stretch and includes another expanded section of about 400 metres,” Chirchir said during the event.

The government believes the project will significantly cut travel times for motorists, public transport operators and other road users while improving safety at one of Nairobi’s key transport links.

The opening comes as Kenya continues investing in urban road infrastructure to address increasing traffic pressure driven by rapid population growth and rising vehicle numbers. While officials have welcomed the completion of the project, its long-term impact on congestion will ultimately depend on traffic volumes and broader improvements across Nairobi’s transport network.
