Real Madrid are moving quickly to redefine themselves under new manager José Mourinho, with a series of early summer signings signalling the direction of a squad in transition.

After two seasons without a major trophy, Real Madrid have turned to experience, versatility and physicality as they reshape their team ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Among the arrivals is left-back Marc Cucurella, signed from Chelsea. The 27-year-old brings energy to a position that has long caused Madrid problems due to injuries and inconsistency.

“I spoke with him and he told me he was excited to work together, that he believes he can adapt and that Real Madrid is a great club,” Cucurella said, referring to Mourinho.

He is expected to add intensity on the left flank, pressing high and offering defensive resilience in transition.

Bernardo Silva offers control in midfield

In midfield, Madrid have added Bernardo Silva, who arrives after leaving Manchester City. The 32-year-old is seen as a solution to a growing control problem in the centre of the pitch, an issue that has lingered since the departures of Luka Modrić and Toni Kroos.

Silva’s experience under Pep Guardiola is expected to help Madrid slow games down and improve their build-up play, while also offering flexibility across midfield and wide areas.

Konaté strengthens a stretched defense

At the back, Ibrahima Konaté joins on a free transfer from Liverpool. His arrival strengthens a defence that has been stretched by injuries in recent seasons.

Konaté acknowledged a difficult year personally and professionally at Anfield. “My form was affected by what happened off the pitch,” he said, pointing to the death of teammate Diogo Jota and his father earlier this year.

He is expected to compete for a starting place alongside Antonio Rüdiger and Éder Militão in a crowded defensive unit.

More moves could follow

Further changes may follow. Madrid continue to be linked with moves for Denzel Dumfries, Enzo Fernández and Michael Olise, as the club considers how best to complete Mourinho’s rebuild.

There was also a sizeable, if symbolic, offer reported for Julián Álvarez, underlining Madrid’s intent to stay active in the market.

With key players such as Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé still away on international duty, the full shape of Mourinho’s side is yet to emerge.

But the early message from Madrid is clear: the rebuild has begun, and it is moving fast.
