The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has sharply raised concerns over its working relationship with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), accusing some of its senior officials of making public remarks that have unsettled its membership.
In a strongly worded statement issued after its Central Committee meeting on April 16, 2026, ODM warned that continued “unwarranted utterances” risk undermining trust within the fragile political arrangement between the two parties.
The committee, chaired by Party Leader Oburu Oginga, made it clear that while ODM remains committed to its principles and agreements, it will not tolerate actions that create anxiety and disquiet among its supporters.
ODM Draws a Red Line
At the heart of ODM’s message was a firm and unambiguous deman of respect from UDA.
The party emphasized that its identity, ideology, and historical foundation must be acknowledged and respected by its coalition partner.
By directly calling out UDA officials, ODM signaled a shift toward a more assertive stance in defending its political space.
The remarks point to growing unease within ODM ranks, with leadership keen to reassure members that the party will not be overshadowed or undermined in the broader political arrangement.
ODM’s statement highlights underlying friction within the partnership formed under the NADCO framework, which sought to ease political tensions and foster cooperation.
While the agreement has delivered some progress, including budgetary allocations for compensating victims of police brutality, the latest developments suggest that political differences remain far from resolved.
The party’s leadership warned that public statements by UDA figures risk eroding goodwill and could destabilize the cooperation that has been carefully built.
At the same time, ODM reiterated its focus on addressing the rising cost of living, particularly fuel prices, urging the government to intensify efforts to cushion Kenyans.
ODM Seek 2027 Revitalisation
Even as tensions with UDA take center stage, ODM is pressing ahead with its internal political strategy.
The party announced plans for nationwide youth conventions aimed at energizing its base and strengthening its structures ahead of the 2027 General Election.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to free and fair nominations, promising that there will be no preferential treatment for aspirants.
These parallel efforts suggest ODM is preparing for all political scenarios, including the possibility of a more competitive or independent path in the next election cycle.
ODM’s latest statement marks a significant moment in its relationship with UDA, shifting the conversation from cooperation to caution.
