Kenyan media personality Kamene Goro has shed light on the staggering cost of healthcare, revealing that her recent hospitalization ran into “many millions”, far beyond what most people can afford.
Speaking candidly about her ordeal, Goro disclosed that at one point, she was spending nearly KSh250,000 per day on antibiotics alone, before additional costs like blood transfusions and ICU care were factored in.
How SHA Helped Offset the Huge Hospital Bill
Goro credited the Social Health Authority (SHA) for significantly easing the financial burden during her treatment.
Despite not having private insurance, she emphasized that SHA stepped in to cover essential costs such as hospital bed charges.
She noted that ICU care alone can cost hundreds of thousands per night, making SHA’s intervention crucial in reducing the overall bill.
“SHA works… it really did help because it dealt with bed charges,” she said, urging Kenyans to take the scheme seriously.
The radio presenter admitted that she had not prioritized health insurance before her illness, a decision she now regrets. She urged Kenyans to regularly check their SHA status and ensure they are registered.
Goro described her final hospital bill as “wild” and “more than anyone should be able to afford,” highlighting the harsh reality many Kenyans face when accessing critical care.
While SHA helped offset some of the expenses, she acknowledged that patients may still need to top up, especially for private facilities and specialized services.
