Calvince Okoth, widely known as Gaucho and self proclaimed “Ghetto President,” has broken his silence following his appointment to the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital Board.
In a heartfelt message addressed to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Gaucho expressed profound gratitude for the mentorship, belief, and opportunities that transformed his life as he recalled how, three years ago, Odinga saw potential in him at a time when he could not see it himself.
“It pains my heart deeply that you are not here to witness the fruits of your goodness, your mentorship, and your unwavering belief in me,” wrote Gaucho who rose to national fame as a vocal supporter of Raila Odinga , particularly during the 2023 cost-of-living protests.
Gaucho described his rise as a direct result of Odinga’s influence, stating that without him, he “would still be lost.”
He also paid special tribute to Rosemary Odinga, acknowledging her pivotal role in changing his life trajectory.
“It is your daughter, Rosemary Odinga, whom I hold in the highest gratitude. She picked me from the streets, believed in me, and brought me into your family,” he stated.
According to Gaucho, Odinga embraced him as a son, mentoring and guiding him through the complex and often unforgiving political landscape.
Acknowledging Support from Sakaja and Ruto
Gaucho further credited Johnson Sakaja for facilitating his opportunity to serve, describing him as a key figure who remembered and uplifted him.
He also extended gratitude to President William Ruto, linking his appointment to the administration’s Bottom-Up economic model.
“I stand as a living testimony,” Gaucho said, emphasizing that the opportunity reflects the government’s commitment to empowering grassroots leaders.
In his message, Gaucho also recognized Junet Mohammed as a mentor and elder brother who has provided guidance and support throughout his journey.
