Ten people have died and six others were seriously injured in a road accident near Chabera Trading Centre in Rachuonyo East, Homa Bay County.
The accident happened at around 8 pm on Sunday when a Nissan matatu collided head-on with a lorry on the Oyugis–Katito road.
The victims were travelling from Kakamega County after attending a wedding. They were members of a church from Nyamira County.
Police and local administrators said the lorry lost control and veered into the matatu’s lane, causing the crash.
Those who died include six women and four men, among them the matatu driver.
The injured passengers were rushed to Rachuonyo South Sub-county Hospital in Oyugis for treatment.
Police said the lorry driver fled the scene after the accident and investigations are ongoing.
The bodies were taken to Rachuonyo South Sub-county Hospital Mortuary, while both vehicles were towed to Othoro Police Station.
Authorities have urged motorists to be extra careful on the roads during the festive season to prevent similar accidents.
