The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has arrested several motorists during random alcoblow tests conducted along the busy Embu–Nairobi highway.
The arrests come as the authority intensifies enforcement ahead of the festive season, a period often linked to a rise in road accidents caused by alcohol use.
In a statement issued on Saturday, NTSA said the overnight operation targeted drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. The authority warned that drunk driving puts the lives of motorists, passengers and other road users at risk.
NTSA urged motorists planning to attend social events to make responsible choices by designating a sober driver or using taxis and other alternative transport options.
The Embu–Nairobi highway is a major travel route during the December holidays, as many Kenyans travel to and from rural areas. Police and road safety agencies have previously flagged the road as prone to speeding, reckless driving and alcohol-related offences.
The authority said similar random checks will continue across the country as part of a wider festive season road safety campaign aimed at reducing accidents and fatalities.
An alcoblow test is a roadside breath analysis used to determine whether a driver has consumed alcohol beyond the legal limit. Motorists who fail the test risk arrest and prosecution under Kenyan traffic laws.
Under the law, drunk driving is a criminal offence punishable by a fine of up to Sh100,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both. Courts may also suspend or cancel a driver’s licence, with repeat offenders facing tougher penalties.
NTSA said enforcement operations such as alcoblow tests complement public awareness efforts meant to encourage safer driving and reduce road carnage during peak travel periods.
