Environmental activist Truphena Muthoni is in the final hours of her effort to complete a 72-hour continuous tree-hugging challenge in Nyeri, a push to set a new world record and raise attention around the environment and mental health.

The 22-year-old began the challenge on Monday, December 8, 2025, outside the Nyeri governor’s office, watched by supporters, county officials and residents. She is trying to break her own previous record of 48 hours, set earlier this year.

From the start, Muthoni has described her action as more than a test of strength. She calls it a form of “silent protest” against deforestation, a message about protecting indigenous forests and a reminder that connecting with nature can support mental well-being.

The challenge has been demanding. Over more than 66 hours, she has faced heavy rain, long cold nights and exhaustion, staying on her feet without food, water or rest. Supporters have stayed close, offering blankets, umbrellas and encouragement as she continues.

Her effort has drawn attention across the country. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua urged her to “push on,” calling the challenge an important message on conservation and mental-health awareness. Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga also praised her, saying her determination reflects the creativity and resilience of young people involved in activism.

For many, the challenge is not only about breaking a record. It has become a symbol of personal commitment to tackling issues such as deforestation, climate change and mental-health struggles.

Muthoni has said that whether she reaches the 72-hour target or not, she hopes the conversation inspired by her action will continue.

With less than four hours left, supporters remain gathered as the countdown continues, and all attention is on Muthoni and the tree she has refused to leave.
