Striker suffers suspected leg fracture after scoring against Tottenham as club awaits scan results
Liverpool fear record signing Alexander Isak could be sidelined for months after suffering a serious leg injury during Saturday’s Premier League win over Tottenham.
The club is awaiting MRI scan results amid concerns the striker fractured his left leg. Isak was injured while scoring Liverpool’s opening goal in the 2-1 victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The 26-year-old was caught by defender Micky van de Ven as he planted his leg while finishing the move. Isak, who had come on as a half-time substitute, was forced off after just 11 minutes on the pitch and appeared to be in clear distress.
Liverpool staff were left puzzled that the incident did not receive further review from VAR, especially in a match that saw two Tottenham players sent off.
Speaking after the game, head coach Arne Slot admitted the injury looked worrying, though he said it was too early to draw medical conclusions.
Isak’s potential absence would be another setback in what has been a difficult debut season. The Sweden international joined Liverpool from Newcastle in the summer for £125 million but had no pre-season and has struggled with a groin injury.
Despite the challenges, his goal against Spurs — created through a promising move with Florian Wirtz — had shown signs of progress before the injury struck.
Liverpool’s attacking options are now stretched. Mohamed Salah is away at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Cody Gakpo is not expected back from a muscle injury until early January.
That leaves Hugo Ekitiké and Federico Chiesa as the only senior forwards currently available. Academy striker Jayden Danns is recovering from a hamstring injury and may feature in the new year.
The club is also considering January reinforcements, with Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo among the targets, as Liverpool prepare for a demanding run of fixtures.
