Kenya’s President William Ruto has congratulated Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan on her re-election, even as unrest continues to grip parts of the country following a disputed vote.

In a statement released on Monday, Ruto praised President Suluhu’s victory and reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to strengthening ties between the two neighbours.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of Kenya, I extend sincere congratulations to Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan on her re-election,” the statement read.

From the statement, Ruto added that Kenya and Tanzania share deep historical ties and common aspirations for the prosperity and stability of its citizens anchored in their shared history and joint membership in the East African Community (EAC).

But behind the diplomatic message lies a tense political atmosphere in Tanzania. The October 29 general election was marred by allegations of irregularities, opposition boycotts, and violent protests that have left several people dead.

Tanzania’s electoral commission declared Suluhu the winner with nearly 98 percent of the vote, a result her opponents called “one-sided.” The main opposition party, CHADEMA, led by detained politician Tundu Lissu, rejected the outcome and demanded sweeping electoral reforms.

Demonstrations erupted in several cities, including Dar es Salaam, where police fired tear gas to disperse protesters. Authorities later imposed a night-time curfew, warning of “firm action” against anyone threatening public order.

While government officials dismissed opposition claims that hundreds were killed in the unrest, the United Nations human rights office reported at least 10 confirmed deaths in three cities, urging restraint and dialogue.

President Ruto, in his statement appealed for calm across the border.

“I encourage all political actors and stakeholders to embrace dialogue and tolerance as they seek to resolve any issues at hand in order to safeguard democracy and stability,” the statement read.
