Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has once again stepped in to help struggling Nairobi families, this time paying hospital bills for 110 mothers who had been detained at Mama Lucy Hospital over unpaid medical fees.
In a statement released on Tuesday, November 4, Sonko said he was moved to act after receiving an appeal for assistance from hospital representatives and community members.
“Today marked a very significant day for me and 110 mothers who were released from Mama Lucy Hospital after I settled their bills,” Sonko said. “In addition to settling their bills, I also provided them with a small amount of financial support as they left the hospital to return to their homes.”
The total medical bill amounted to Ksh2 million, but Sonko revealed that after negotiations, he paid Ksh1.6 million to secure the mothers’ release.
Beyond paying their hospital fees, Sonko also pledged to cover their Social Health Authority (SHA) registration to ensure continued access to healthcare.
However, the former governor expressed his condolences to four mothers who lost their babies while at the facility. “On a somber note, four mothers sadly lost their babies, and I extend my heartfelt condolences,” he said.
Sonko’s charitable gesture follows a series of similar interventions in recent weeks. In October, he offered full support to the families of two pupils who died in a tragic accident at Emmanuel New Life Academy in Kayole after debris from a neighboring building collapsed onto their school.
Through his Sonko Rescue Team, he covered all morgue expenses, provided coffins, and arranged free transportation of the bodies to their rural homes, saying it was part of his mission as a Good Deeds Ambassador.
Sonko’s continued acts of generosity have earned him praise among Kenyans online, with many describing him as a consistent voice for the vulnerable.
