Former England striker Ian Wright has strongly defended Jude Bellingham, saying that the growing criticism around the midfielder reflects a wider discomfort with the rise of a confident, high-profile Black athlete.
Bellingham has faced backlash after his reaction to being substituted during England’s World Cup qualifying win against Albania. Some critics suggested he was becoming disruptive within the squad. Wright believes this narrative has nothing to do with football and everything to do with how some people view Bellingham’s success, confidence and influence.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Wright said that Bellingham’s talent, consistency and leadership make him a target for people who don’t know how to respond to a young Black player performing at the highest level. He argued that Bellingham represents a new kind of English star outspoken, ambitious and unafraid. Qualities that he believes do not sit well with certain audiences.
Wright also compared the public reaction to different Black players, noting that some fans prefer quieter personalities, while players with strong presence and flair often attract harsher judgment. He said Bellingham’s ability, charisma and mentality make him stand out in ways that challenge expectations.
He added that he had privately warned Bellingham before the international break that the attention around him would intensify and that he needed to be prepared for the scrutiny that comes with his level of influence.
Bellingham was recalled to Thomas Tuchel’s squad for Serbia and Albania after missing the previous international window. Despite the criticism, he remains a central figure for both club and country, and Wright believes he will continue to rise above the noise.
