Rain is set to hold on across large parts of Kenya this week, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD). The agency’s seven-day outlook for 4-10 November shows showers continuing in the Highlands, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria basin and coastal zones.
In the Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, as well as in the Lake Victoria basin and the coast, KMD forecasts rainfall in the mornings, then further afternoon showers and occasional storms. Meanwhile, daytime highs above 30 °C are expected in the coast, north-eastern and north-western regions. Some east-highland and southeastern lowland areas may also see similar temperatures.
By contrast, night-time minima will dip below 10 °C in parts of the Highlands east of the Rift, the central Rift Valley and near Mt. Kilimanjaro.
A cautious outlook for the “short rains”
KMD’s seasonal bulletin for the October–December “short rains” warns that overall rain levels may be near to below average across parts of the north-east, south-eastern lowlands and the coast. However, the Highlands west of the Rift Valley and north-western districts could see near to above-average totals.
In effect, while rain is expected this week, it might only signal a slow build rather than a heavy deluge everywhere. Residents and authorities are urged to remain alert rather than assume relief.
On-the-ground impact
In recent days, heavy rainfall triggered landslides, flash floods and travel disruption in counties such as Machakos, Kitui, Kilifi, Isiolo and Murang’a. One station recorded 184 mm in a week.

What to watch for and what you can do
Authorities and citizens are advised to:
- Monitor KMD updates regularly and heed local advisories.
- Be prepared for afternoon storms in highland areas and morning showers on the coast.
- Consider the sharp drop in night-time temps in highland zones: low-lying communities should take care of vulnerable people, especially children and the elderly.
- Be cautious when travelling on roads prone to flooding or landslides; early showers can make travel hazardous.
