Samuel Umtiti, the French defender who scored one of the most famous goals in his country’s football history, has announced his retirement from club football at the age of 31.
The former Barcelona and Lyon player confirmed the decision on Monday in a heartfelt message to his supporters.
“After an intense career with ups and downs, the time has come to say goodbye,” he wrote on Instagram. “I gave everything with passion and I regret nothing.”

Umtiti’s career was defined by two things: glory on the world stage and repeated struggles with injury. He was just 24 when he rose to global attention in 2018, powering home the winning header against Belgium in the World Cup semi-final. France went on to lift the trophy in Moscow, and Umtiti’s name was etched into national memory.
Born in Cameroon and raised in Lyon, Umtiti began his professional career with his boyhood club before moving to Barcelona in 2016. He won two La Liga titles and three Copa del Rey trophies during his time in Spain, but persistent knee problems limited his appearances and eventually stalled his rise.
After a loan spell at Lecce in Italy, he signed for Lille in 2024. But once again, injuries kept him off the pitch for much of his stay in France.
Despite the frustrations, his achievements remain undeniable. Alongside Raphael Varane at the heart of France’s defence, Umtiti played a central role in securing the nation’s second World Cup title. He now joins fellow champions Blaise Matuidi, Adil Rami, Steve Mandanda and Varane in stepping away from the game.
For French fans, his retirement closes the chapter on a player who gave them a moment they will never forget.
