Traffic Disruptions in Nairobi Ahead of World Cup Qualifier

NAIROBI, 5 September 2025 – The National Police Service has announced major traffic diversions in Nairobi today, beginning at 6:00 a.m., as the city hosts a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.

Motorists using Thika Superhighway and connecting routes have been advised to follow alternative diversions due to temporary road closures. Police officers have been deployed at key points to manage the flow of vehicles and ensure security.

According to the traffic advisory:

  • Nairobi CBD–Thika Road (Ruiru/Juja/Thika): Motorists should use Kiambu Road via Exit 4. A roadblock will be mounted at Muthaiga.
  • Thika Superhighway heading to Mwiki: Drivers should divert through Ruaka–Baba Dogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River–Mwiki.
  • Thika, Juja, and Ruiru to Nairobi CBD: Motorists are advised to use Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road. A roadblock will be in place at Ruiru Interchange.
  • Githurai to Nairobi CBD: Traffic will be diverted through Githurai 44–Kiambu Road.
  • Nairobi CBD to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani Stadium (without access passes): Drivers should use the service lane at Exit 7 and Exit 8.

The police urged drivers to cooperate with officers on site to minimise congestion and ensure smooth traffic flow. Additional officers have been deployed, and authorities warned that stern action will be taken against anyone violating traffic rules.

The diversions are expected to remain in effect until after the conclusion of the World Cup qualifier at Kasarani Stadium.
