Police have opened an investigation after a 28-year-old car washer was fatally stabbed during a confrontation in Litein town on Monday night.

According to Bureti Sub-County Police Commander Bernard Chirchir, the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Tashamila Cherotich, is accused of attacking Barnabas Kiprotich Bett near Stabex Petrol Station.

“She struck him in the upper chest near the shoulder with what is believed to be a kitchen knife,” Mr Chirchir said in a statement on Tuesday.

Bett was rushed by bystanders to Litein Mission Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Residents, angered by the incident, tracked down the suspect to a nearby plot about 150 metres from the scene. Police intervened to prevent her from being lynched and placed her under arrest.

Detectives said Cherotich later led officers to a napier grass plantation, where she had allegedly hidden the blood-stained knife. The weapon has been secured as evidence.

The suspect is being held at Litein Police Station and is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been taken to Litein Mission Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Violent altercations remain a frequent concern in small towns across Kenya, where police and local leaders have repeatedly urged communities to seek non-violent means of resolving disputes.
