CAF boosts total prize pool by 45% ahead of Morocco tournament kickoff

RABAT — The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has doubled the winner’s prize money for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), setting a new benchmark in the continent’s premier women’s football tournament.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced that this year’s champions will receive $1 million, a 100% increase from the previous edition. “This increase shows our commitment to growing women’s football in Africa. We hope it contributes to better salaries for players, coaches, and staff,” Motsepe said in a statement released Thursday.

The total prize fund for the tournament has also been raised by 45%, bringing the overall pool to $3.475 million.

The runner-up will take home $500,000. Third-place finishers will collect $350,000, and the fourth-placed team will receive $300,000. Quarter-finalists are set to earn $200,000 each. Nations finishing third and fourth in their respective groups will be awarded $150,000 and $125,000 respectively.

The 2025 WAFCON kicks off Saturday, July 5, at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat with hosts Morocco facing Zambia at 11:00 p.m. local time.

The tournament features 12 nations divided into three groups:

Group A

  • Morocco
  • Zambia
  • DR Congo
  • Senegal

Group B

  • Nigeria
  • Algeria
  • Botswana
  • Tunisia

Group C

  • Ghana
  • South Africa
  • Mali
  • Tanzania

Matches will take place across six venues, including Rabat’s 21,000-capacity Olympic Stadium, Casablanca’s Larbi Zaouli and Père Jégo Stadiums, El Bachir in Mohammédia, Honour Stadium in Oujda, and Berkane Stadium.

CAF’s move comes as global attention on women’s football grows, with calls for fair pay and investment gaining momentum. By raising the stakes, CAF aims to increase competitiveness and support for female athletes across Africa. The 2025 edition marks a pivotal moment in the tournament’s history and signals a push for long-term growth in the women’s game.
