President William Ruto has led Kenya in mourning the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13.
In a statement released Monday morning, Ruto described Buhari as a principled leader whose vision and commitment to Africa’s development left a lasting mark.

“This is a profound loss not just to Nigeria, but to the entire continent,” Ruto said. “His leadership, grounded in discipline and purpose, enriched Africa’s collective journey toward self-reliance and dignity.”
President Ruto extended condolences to Buhari’s family, the Government of Nigeria, and its people. “On behalf of the Government and People of the Republic of Kenya, I extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to Your Excellency, the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria upon the passing of H.E. President Muhammadu Buhari,” the statement read.
Buhari, who served two terms as Nigeria’s head of state from 2015 to 2023, was widely known for his firm stance against corruption and his efforts to strengthen regional security through anti-terrorism cooperation across West Africa. President Ruto acknowledged these efforts, calling Buhari “a relentless champion against corruption” and “a key figure in advancing Africa’s agenda for economic integration.”
Ruto also recalled Buhari’s official visit to Nairobi in January 2016, which marked a significant step in deepening diplomatic ties between Kenya and Nigeria. He further noted the former president’s congratulatory message following Ruto’s election victory in August 2022.
“In this time of grief, Kenya stands in solidarity with the Government and People of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Ruto said. “May the legacy of President Buhari continue to inspire all of us in our pursuit of peace, dignity, and shared prosperity across Africa.”
The late Buhari’s contributions to governance and stability, both in Nigeria and across the African region, continue to draw praise from leaders around the continent as tributes pour in.
