Is Barcelona Putting Too Much Pressure on Lamine Yamal with Messi’s Iconic No. 10?

BARCELONA – When Lamine Yamal stepped out holding Barcelona’s number 10 shirt on Wednesday, the cameras flashed and fans cheered. But beneath the celebration, a quieter question lingered: Is the club placing too heavy a burden on its teenage star?

The 18-year-old winger has dazzled since breaking into the senior team at just 15. A product of La Masia, like Lionel Messi before him, Yamal played a key role in Barcelona’s domestic treble last season. His skill, flair, and calm on the ball have already drawn comparisons to the club’s greatest ever player.

But now, by handing him the shirt once worn by Messi, Ronaldinho and Maradona, Barcelona may have crossed a line from confidence to pressure.

“There’s no doubt Yamal is special,” said one former La Masia coach, who asked not to be named. “But the number 10 comes with shadows. It’s not just a shirt—it’s a legacy.”

Yamal himself appeared calm during the unveiling. “Messi made his path and I will make mine,” he told reporters at the Camp Nou club shop. “I will work as hard as I can and try to make Barça fans happy.”

Still, the symbolism is hard to ignore. After Ansu Fati—once dubbed Messi’s heir—was handed the number in 2021, he struggled with injuries and inconsistent form. Now on loan at Monaco, Fati’s story is a cautionary tale of expectation outweighing readiness.

“Barcelona has a history of burning out young talent by comparing them to Messi,” said Spanish football analyst José Manuel Díaz. “The number 10 should be earned over time, not gifted as a headline.”

Yamal signed a long-term contract in May keeping him at the club until 2031, making him one of their highest-paid players. He has already played over 100 matches and scored 25 goals—a staggering tally for someone his age. But football is as much about the mental game as it is about skill.

“When I was little, I dreamed of being at Barça and having this number,” Yamal said. “Barça is my life.”

That dream may now come with expectations few players his age are built to carry. While fans may see another Messi in the making, others argue the club should let Yamal grow without the weight of comparison.

“It’s about legacy, yes,” said Díaz. “But it’s also about timing. You don’t give someone the crown before they’ve finished growing into the role.”

The recent controversy surrounding his 18th birthday party—with Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights calling for an investigation—has only added to the scrutiny. Yamal, however, brushed it off. “When I’m away from Barça, I enjoy my life. That’s all.”

As Barcelona prepares for the new season, Yamal finds himself under a global spotlight—praised, watched, and inevitably judged.

The question now is simple: Will he rise to the challenge, or has the club handed him more than just a shirt?

Time will tell. But for now, the weight of history rests on the shoulders of an 18-year-old boy with the number 10 on his back.
