Wetang’ula urges African Union to back Sahrawi Republic’s sovereignty

Nairobi – National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on the African Union to stand firm in defending the sovereignty and self-determination of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. His remarks came during a meeting with Ambassador Mohamed-Liman Ali Ami, who represents the Sahrawi Republic in Kenya.

Speaking at Parliament Buildings in Nairobi, Wetang’ula stated, “I have made an appeal to the African Union to champion this cause in order to promote the growth, peace, and prosperity of this young nation.”

The Speaker emphasized the Sahrawi people’s right to independence, adding that the AU must play a decisive role in ensuring their voice is protected on the continent.

The Sahrawi Republic, which claims territory in Western Sahara, continues to seek full recognition as a sovereign state amid long-standing disputes involving Morocco. While some African countries support Sahrawi independence, others maintain a neutral stance.

During the meeting, Wetang’ula and Ambassador Ali Ami discussed strategies to strengthen diplomatic ties between Kenya and the Sahrawi Republic. “Our discussions focused on deepening cooperation and strengthening the bilateral relationship between our two nations,” Wetang’ula said.

He also assured the Ambassador of Kenya’s continued support. “Kenya remains steadfast in standing with the Sahrawi Republic as a sovereign state,” Wetang’ula stated.

Ambassador Ali Ami welcomed the show of solidarity. He expressed gratitude for Kenya’s consistent backing in what he described as a critical time for the Sahrawi people. “Kenya has been a key ally in our pursuit of lasting peace and regional stability,” he said.

He further noted that increased cooperation with Kenya would help drive development efforts in the Sahrawi Republic. “Kenya has much to offer, and deeper engagement will serve the shared interests of both nations,” he added.

The meeting signals Kenya’s reaffirmed position on regional sovereignty and its broader commitment to upholding the African Union’s charter on self-determination and peaceful coexistence.
