More Rain This Week for Western and Coastal Kenya, Weather Office Warns

Rain is not going away just yet. The Kenya Meteorological Department has confirmed that showers will continue this week across several parts of the country.

In its weekly forecast issued on Tuesday, the agency listed the affected areas as the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Coast, and Western Kenya. The rainy spell will last until Monday, 9 June.

“It’s important for the public to stay alert,” said an official from the department, speaking on condition of anonymity. “There will be rainfall in most of these regions, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms.”

Wide Weather Swings

The weather outlook shows a striking contrast in conditions across the country.

Much of the Coast, North-eastern and North-western Kenya will see daytime temperatures soar above 30°C. At the same time, chilly nights are expected in parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley and areas near Mt Kilimanjaro, where temperatures could dip below 10°C.

Strong winds—blowing at over 25 knots (around 13 metres per second)—are also expected. These will affect the Coast, Kenya’s territorial waters, South-eastern lowlands, and parts of the north.

Morning Rains, Afternoon Storms

Western Kenya and the Rift Valley will bear the brunt of the rain. Counties such as Kisumu, Homabay, Kisii, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, and Kericho are likely to experience showers in the mornings, followed by thunderstorms in the afternoon. Light showers are also expected at night.

Farther north, in Turkana and Samburu, mornings and afternoons will be mostly sunny, with some cloud cover at night.

The Central Highlands and Nairobi County will see occasional rainfall, mainly in the afternoons and during the night. Daytimes may remain dry and cloudy in places.

In North-eastern counties such as Mandera, Marsabit, and Wajir, the sun will dominate during the day, with a few clouds forming at night.

Cloudy Skies Along the Coast

Morning showers are likely in coastal counties—Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu, and parts of Tana River. The rest of the day will clear up with sunny intervals, while nights will stay partly cloudy.

Inland counties in the South-eastern lowlands like Machakos, Kitui, and Kajiado will start the day under cloud cover, which will give way to sunshine later on. Nights here will be partly cloudy.

Public Advised to Stay Prepared

The meteorological agency has encouraged Kenyans to plan ahead.

“People in flood-prone areas should be cautious,” the official said. “The changing weather could affect roads, travel plans, and even crop growth.”

The warning comes as schools reopen and rural roads become harder to navigate. In many parts of Nairobi, drainage systems are already overwhelmed.

As the country continues to feel the effects of changing weather patterns, authorities say regular updates will be issued to keep citizens informed.
