Kenya Airways Marks Sustainability Milestone With First Independent Report
NAIROBI — Kenya Airways has released its first stand-alone, independently verified Sustainability Report, signaling a new chapter in the airline’s long-term commitment to environmental and social accountability.

The 2024 report details major improvements in waste reduction, gender diversity, workforce expansion, and clean energy usage. The document was made public today and sets a baseline for future sustainability reporting.

According to the report, Kenya Airways served 5.2 million passengers in 2024, a rise from previous years. The airline also grew its workforce by 8%, bringing in new talent amid a broader post-pandemic recovery. Of the total workforce, 44% are now women, an increase that reflects focused inclusion efforts.
“We are building a more sustainable and inclusive future, not only for Kenya Airways but for aviation in Africa,” the airline stated in a public release.
Kenya Airways also reported a 15% cut in operational waste and noted that 12% of its ground equipment is now powered using renewable energy. The report further outlined increased investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), though the company did not disclose specific volumes or timelines for full transition.
In addition to environmental performance, the airline detailed expanded community engagement efforts, including educational partnerships and local development programs.
The report highlighted governance changes aimed at improving oversight and accountability in its sustainability practices. It includes externally assured data, providing third-party verification of the airline’s claims a first for Kenya Airways.
The release comes as airlines across the globe face rising scrutiny over carbon emissions and pressure to comply with international climate targets. Aviation accounts for an estimated 2–3% of global CO₂ emissions annually, making decarbonization a pressing challenge for the industry.
By introducing cleaner fuels, upgrading infrastructure, and investing in gender equity, Kenya Airways aims to align with global aviation standards while addressing regional development goals.
The airline confirmed that this will be the first in a series of annual sustainability reports. Future editions will track progress and provide updates on climate strategies, workforce equality, and community impact.
“This report is not an end it’s a beginning,” the company added. “It holds us accountable to the promises we’ve made and the people we serve.”
